The Hutton Suite

The Hutton suite faces north, with far reaching views across open countryside. On a clear day you can see the largest white horse in England, on the cliffs at Kilburn, and to the east the Temple of Victory, built for the Duke of York. Legend has it that his 10,000 soldiers were marched up and down the hill that is stands on, inspiring the nursery rhyme. The room itself is thought to date from the 17th century, untouched by the changes made on the house by Robert Adam and John Carr and making it original to the era of the Hutton family.

History:
The Hutton Suite is named after Sir Richard Hutton, who purchased the village in 1601 from the Goldsborough family, who had no option but to sell after a family feud saw their original manor house destroyed in 1588. The current Hall was built on a new site, on raised ground near to the church and completed in 1625.

Sir Richard Hutton was a London lawyer who was knighted in 1617 for services to the crown. His son became High Sheriff of Yorkshire and MP for Knaresborough and fought for the King at the nearby Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. The Hutton family lived at the Hall for several generations before it passed through the female side to the Wharton family.
